About Shastriji Maharaj

His Holiness Shastriji Maharaj (1865–1951), born as Dungar Bhakta, was the founder of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and the revealer of the Akshar-Purushottam doctrine in institutional form. His life was marked by courage, devotion, scholarship, and unwavering faith.

From a very young age, Dungar Bhakta showed extraordinary spiritual inclination and deep scriptural understanding. His intelligence and devotion impressed senior sadhus, and he was later initiated into the monastic order as Shastri Yagnapurushdas. Because of his profound mastery of Hindu scriptures, especially the Vedas, Upanishads, and the Bhagavad Gita, he earned the respected title “Shastri.”

Establishment of BAPS (1907)

Under the visionary leadership of Shastriji Maharaj, the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha was formally established in 1907. This marked the beginning of a spiritual fellowship rooted in disciplined devotion, moral living, and the pure worship of God.

Construction of the First Akshar-Purushottam Mandirs
